Idea Generation - Proposed Ideas
To begin brainstorming ideas, each of the members in our team went to find four different film quotes and write a short scenario for each one.
The four quotes I chose were:
"Elementary, my dear Watson." - The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1929)
1) Side shot of man (father), proud expression.
2) (Quote)
3) Pans out, relieving an elementary school. Father nudges son forwards.
"They're here!" - Poltergeist (1982)
House Party Setting
1) Person peeking through curtains
2) (Their POV) Pizza delivery car pulls up outside of house.
3) (Cut back to living room) Pulls head out from curtains (Quote)
"I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore." - Network (1972)
Bedroom setting - dark
1) (Behind) Shot of guy at computer, screen lighting the room.
2) (Cut to side shot of face, aggravated)
3) Hits desk (quote)
4) (Cut to computer screen) Lost game - uninstalls.
"What we've got here is, failure to communicate" - Cool Hand Luke (1967)
Doctor/Psychiatrist office
1) Shot of the doctor/psychiatrist with fingers over mouth (thoughtful expression)
2) (Quote) Glancing around the room.
3) (Cut to shot of whole room) 5 chairs in a circle, each with a different animal sat on them.
Out of the quotes I proposed, "Failure to communicate" was the idea that was best received and was chosen to be featured in the team animation. Accepted ideas proposed by other members are:
"This is Sparta!" - 300 (2007)
Crosswalk setting
1) Ducks crossing the road, car fails to slow down.
2) Man notices, jumps into the road (quote)
3) Kicks the car, sending it flying into space.
"Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." - The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Moon setting
1) Shot of two people in a car, both with heads down (as if they've been in a crash)
2) Driver wakes up and gets out of the car (begins to float)
3) (Quote) Camera pans out to show a shot of the Moon and Earth.
"Fly you fools!" - Lord of the Rings (2001)
Park setting
1) Man finds injured bird.
2) Shot of man holding bird, nursing it back to health
3) (Quote) Man throws the bird
4) (Tracking shot of bird)
5) Bird hits a window and slowly slides down
6) (Cut to man - shocked expression)
Storyboard Creation
Intention
Today (21/10/18) I will be creating some concept storyboards for the team animation project. These storyboards will be blocked out in 3DS Max and will be between 3 and 5 panels long.
Storyboard - Failure To Communicate
The first storyboard I created was for the quote: "What we've got here is, failure to communicate". After discussing, in class, what the scene could look like, I incorporated these ideas into the storyboard. We wanted the window to be in shot for the majority of the scene, as there are a group of ducks that would then be featured in the next scene. This detail was added for continuity, so those paying attention to the environment would make the connection between scenes.

Storyboard - Fly You Fools
Using ideas from the discussion in class, I created this storyboard for the quote: "Fly you fools". This storyboard doesn't feature any background (like the first one), although this scene will likely have events occurring in the background from previous scenes (like the ducks walking by or crossing the road, cars driving by etc).

Updated Storyboard - Fly You Fools
Before rendering and the addition of cameras to the 'Fly You Fools' animation, I updated the storyboard for this scene. This was done in response to Geo's feedback - mentioning that the animation beginning part-way in has it lose context. This leaves people wondering where the bird came from or why the bird is being held. The updated story board contains scenes of the character walking towards the bird, close ups and overall more complex camera movement. Without the scenes of the character walking in the storyboard - they wouldn't appear in the final render; with time spent on animating a walk I would want that to be featured. After recreating the storyboard for this animation I am able to properly vision how the scene will play out. Updating the storyboard also helps the team members vision what will happen during the animation. The addition of environment elements to the storyboard helps when framing shots, making sure the camera wont clip into parts of the scene.
